Things to do Exploring Australia

Yarraman and Yarraman State Forest

Location

Yarraman

What it is?

Yarraman is small country town with sculpted timber heads and home of the Yarraman State Forest. The state forest has picnic areas and 4WD tracks that allow for relaxation and adventure.
Yarraman is between Nanango and Blackbutt, two South Burnett towns, but it is actually part of the Toowoomba region. I have included it in both regions search function for this reason.

What it offers?

  • Camping,
  • accommodation,
  • 4WDing,
  • adventure searching for all the timber carved heads.

Yarraman is the beginning (or the end) of the New England Highway that travels all the way down to Hexham near Newcastle.

Wheelchair Access?

May require assistance.

Cafe’s and pub are accessible for lunch.

Some public toilets are wheelchair accessible (e.g. the Weir).

What we did?

We explored the area looking for the heads and found seven, with the largest located outside the Royal Hotel on the main street. You can learn more about the Heads HERE.

To the east of town, there is a cattle park and weir, which offers overnight camping facilities. This area is particularly suitable for those traveling with horses, as it features a fenced space for horses to stretch their legs.

The Yarraman State Forest provided a pleasant drive, with certain sections designated as 4WD-only tracks; it’s best to stay within the day-use area if you don’t have a 4WD. We relaxed in a hammock and enjoyed the serene view of the sky and trees—an incredibly peaceful experience.

If you are driving through it makes for a nice overnight stay. You don’t need longer than that.

With Kids: water; snacks; wide brim hat; sunscreen; bug spray; good sturdy shoes.

With Pets: Being a state forest, dogs are allowed on a leash. please ensure you clean up after your pet and keep them secure at all time; there are wild animals around.
