Things to do Exploring Australia

Location

Albury/Wodonga

What it is?

Albury/Wodonga are twin cities on opposite sides of the Murray River. Albury is on the NSW side of the river and Wodonga is on the Victorian side.

What it offers?

Everything is here that you could possibly need. Family friendly, pet friendly, restaurants, pubs and hotels, accommodation, library, supermarkets, speciality stores, department stores, camping and leisure stores, hiking tracks, you name it and i think it is here.

Wheelchair Access?

The Hume Dam wall, Yindyamarra Sculpture Walk and Botanical Gardens are wheelchair accessible. with disabled facilities available.

What we did?

Hume Dam – situated only five minutes from the city centre of Albury. The dam is accessible from either side of the Murray River and is an easy 4km walk from one side to the other. It is approximately 400kms to drive around the Hume Lake.

Albury Botanical Gardens – I have been to a lot of Botanical Gardens and although it is very well designed and looked after, it was somewhat disappointing. Maybe it was just the time of year.

Yindyamarra Sculpture Walk – I really enjoyed myself here. It was relaxing and peaceful, even with the number of people that were there. It is next door to the waste water facility, so keep your car windows up on the drive in! Apart from that it was a really beautiful place. The walk is 5kms, but you can do the 2.5 or 5km. I did the 2.5 km as i wanted to have enough time to go see the other places on my list of things to do.  I was also hoping to have enough time to take Bella back for a walk to do the other half. There is a boat ramp into the River and a wetlands with an abundance of wildlife including turtles at the same location.

Huon Hill Parklands and lookout – it is an amazing 360 degree view that overlooks the entire region. Truly beautiful and if i had more time, i would have stayed up there for so much longer than i did. If you want to spend a bit longer up there, take a picnic with you. There are a few picnic tables, there were a lot of wild flowers when i was up there and i feel that a picnic with bees would not be ideal. I want to return in winter and see the snow from up here.

Monument Hill War Memorial – a tribute to the fallen. An Anzac Day service up here would be great, there is a lot of space, toilets and a view. Pop up there and say Thanks.

Kiewa River Walk – kilometres of hiking tracks. More information can be seen in the photos.

Two of the kids have just moved to the region, so i am excited to return at different times of the. year and explore the area further. It is a beautiful piece of Australia.

Highlight?

Huon Hill Parklands and Yindyamarra Sculpture Walk. Two absolutely gorgeous locations.

Would I do it again?

I will definitely return to Huon Hill Parklands and the Yindyamarra Sculpture Walk. I will also return to the Dam/Lake as it covers such a vast area that i could go to a new location each time i come down and not see the entire thing. The Kiewa River walk would be great to do in winter, I don’t like the idea of snakes and there is a lot of bushland.

As a couple: Pre-downloaded maps on your phone (reception is good, but best to be prepared); water bottles; stainless steel coffee cup for your morning coffee; healthy snacks for the walking tracks; wide brim hat: sunscreen; bug spray; good sturdy shoes; swimmers and towels depending on the season; umbrella for sun/rain; jacket; picnic and picnic blanket.

With Kids: Water; snacks; wide brim hat; sunscreen; bug spray; good sturdy shoes.

With Pets: There were a number of dogs at all of the places i visited. Please just be a respectful and responsible pet owner; clean up after them, don’t allow them to interfere with wildlife and keep them on a leash.  I saw a few places where poop. bags were available, but best to take your own as they were not available everywhere.
