Beautiful State Forest with an abundance of exploration to be had.Â
What it offers?
The drive from Mackay to Cathu State Forest takes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. Before entering the State Forest, you’ll find a campground, which we noted was surprisingly busy. Jaxut is the main campground within the State Forest.
During our visit, there were several cars and bikes exploring the 4WD tracks.
For those seeking the infinity pool, look for a distinctive tree marking the direction to turn (see photos).
Our GPS, DORA (which often leads us on unexpected adventures), directed us to a location when searching for the lookout, but we found ourselves in the middle of the road with no lookout in sight: to find the lookout, continue driving until you reach a fork in the road, then take the left turn; the lookout is located further along this route.
It’s a beautiful spot, perfect for a day trip or a weekend getaway.
As a couple: Pre-downloaded maps on your phone (no reception); water bottles; wide brim hat: sunscreen; bug spray; good sturdy shoes; swimmers and towels if the water is flowing at the waterfall and infinity pool; picnic and picnic blanket; camping equipment.
With Kids: water; snacks; wide brim hat; sunscreen; bug spray; good sturdy shoes.
With Pets: being a state forest, dogs are not banned. The camping webpage does not have the dog on the lead highlighted indicated that they are not allowed at the campsite. If you are contemplating taking your dog, check with QPWS and always be a responsible pet owner. Be aware of wildlife in the area.
