The largest butterfly aviary in the southern hemisphere
What it offers?
Home to over 1200 tropical butterflies. You can see them in every stage of their life. There is lots of information about the differences in the butterflies, what they eat, how they reproduce, their lifecycle and life expectancy. You can see the Cairns Birdwing and the beautiful Ulysses butterfly.
My eldest really wanted to go here and see the butterflies. You can see all different stages of the butterfly as you walk throughout the sanctuary and the site map shows you exactly where everything is. My daughters favourite bit was when a butterfly landed on her.
While up at Kuranda we walked around the local markets and shops and had lunch at one of the cafes.
Highlight?
We had seen plenty of the Ulysses Butterflies, but i hadn’t seen the Cairns Birdwing. Even though it is in captivity, it was still really nice to be able to see one alive.
Would I do it again?
I did do it again, when my youngest came to visit. It was lovely and worth the visit. We gained knowledge at each visit and each visit is different due to which butterflies were about, but two times is enough for me.
