Location
CAIRNS ESPLANADE
What it is?
The foreshore of Cairns. The beach here is not swimmable, there is mud and crocodiles. The esplanade offers a lovely area for family relaxation including: grassed areas; picnic tables and BBQs; art work to stroll along and view; across the road are the shops and food outlets; plenty of accommodation overlooking the foreshore; and, walking distance to everything.
What it offers?
Swimming safely in the man-made lagoon; fitness along the 2km stretch; somewhere to walk your dog; plenty of cafes /restaurants /bars; beautiful gardens (the gardens in Cairns are really well maintained and are so beautiful); picnic tables and BBQs; Art work; Anzac Memorial; Ferris Wheel.
More information can be found on the Cairns Regional Council website
Wheelchair Access?
May require assistance.
The esplanade is a cement pathway. If there is any difficulty or damage, contact the council to repair.
What we did?
Multiple visits resulted in multiple different things.
We sat and watched the helicopter fly out to Green Island and back.
There are buskers, or just people who like to play guitar and sing, that you can stop and enjoy.
The numerous cafes and restaurants to buy food and coffee
There are bars and shops. The Pier shopping centre is not what it used to be, but it is still there and worth a look. We parked in this area when we went to Green Island for the day.
There is the Marina there where the day cruises leave from and it is alway nice walking along there checking out all the boats.
Highlight?
ohh thats a tough one. Probably all the kids swimming safely and laughing away in the lagoon.
Would I do it again?
We walked the esplanade multiple times. It is different each time as there are different people around, the tide is different, the animals are different. If you like people watching, this is a great place to sit and chill.
What do you need?
As a couple: water bottles; stainless steel coffee cup; healthy snacks; wide brim hat: sunscreen; bug spray; walking shoes; swimmers and towels; umbrella for sun/rain; jacket; picnic and picnic blanket.
With Kids: water; snacks; wide brim hat; sunscreen; bug spray; shoes are a given in any public place. If you want to get them to use energy and take them for a swim at the Lagoon, you will obviously need swimmers and towels.
With Pets: The esplanade is a 2 km stretch that is dog friendly. Please be a responsible pet owner and have your dog in a lead at all times and clean up after they poop.
