Things to do Exploring Australia

Location

BABINDA BOULDERS, JOSEPHINE FALLS and GOLDEN HOLE

What it is?

Babinda Boulders is a natural creek bed surrounded by rainforest with areas available for swimming. Please stay on the path as you walk down to the falls; you are not allowed to be in the water area as you walk down, as it is very slippery and dangerous, resulting in 21 people having lost their life there since 1916.

The drive from Cairns is approximately one hour, and approximately half an hour from Innisfail. Babinda Boulders to Josephine Falls is just over 20 minutes. Josephine Falls to Golden Hole is only a 3 minute drive. Josephine Falls has a slippery rock that everyone uses as a slippery dip into the swimming hole beneath it.

What it offers?

Beauty, swimming, adventure, fun, National Park, a great day trip from Cairns, or Innisfail.

Wheelchair Access?

May require assistance.
Babinda Boulders would be the most wheelchair accessible of the three.

What we did?

Babinda Boulders

When we left Cairns, it was a nice sunny April day, but that did not last. It did however cool the day down. We went to Babinda Boulders first. There were people swimming in the water when we arrived. I have since been told that crocodiles have been seen in these water’s, so please remain vigilant at all times. We did not choose to go swimming, rather we walked down to the end of the path to check out the falls. You are not allowed to walk or swim in the falls as it is slippery and very dangerous, and numerous people have lost their lives here but not adhering to the warnings. We stayed on the correct side of the fenced area and enjoyed the falls respectfully. It really is a beautiful area. The rain was starting to set in, and we still had two areas close by we wanted to check out.

We had lunch in Babinda at a local café, where we ordered works burgers. They were delicious and huge.

Golden Hole

On the way to Josephine Falls there is a turn off for Golden Hole. Be sure to go down there for a look as it is very pretty and there is plenty of room to take a picnic if you plan to go there on a nice day. There are crocodiles in this area and plenty of warning signs advising not to go swimming. We walked down to the water and around the freshly mowed grass area with its large boulders. We walked up to the top of the hill, not sure if it led to a hike, but it is private property once you reach the top of the grassed area.

Josephine falls

Next was Josephine falls. You walk up a well-kept path for about 15-20 minutes. You can go to the falls here and this is where the “slide” is found, essentially a slippery rock where you can slide into the deeper water. You can also choose to walk further up about another 5 minutes to the top where there is a deeper pool. It was raining when we were here, but it did not stop the many people who were there to enjoy themselves.

Clyde the crocodile

An unadvertised pleasure in Babinda is Clyde the local crocodile. Please treat Clyde with respect and acknowledge that he is a wild animal and he can kill you. To respectfully see Clyde, travel along Clyde Road Babinda to the Russell River. Clyde likes to sit in the sun on the southern side of the bridge. Do not attempt to go any closer to Clyde than the bridge. Please do not ruin this for others to experience by being stupid for a selfie.

If you keep following Clyde Road past the river, you will find a Deer Sanctuary.

Highlight?

The colour of the water at Babinda Boulders, just beautiful. Don’t forget the camera.

Would I do it again?

We did all three of these locations twice and yes, we probably would return if we were in the area.

As a couple: Pre-downloaded maps on your phone (reception is patchy); water bottles; stainless steel coffee cup; healthy snacks or lunch; wide brim hat: sunscreen; bug spray; good sturdy shoes; swimmers and towels; umbrella for sun/rain; jacket; picnic and picnic blanket.

With Kids: water; snacks; wide brim hat; sunscreen; bug spray; good sturdy shoes.

With Pets: The Boulders are not dog friendly, but it is advertised that you can kayak with your dog. I am not sure i like that idea as dogs like to swim and there are crocodiles in the area…
Josephine Falls is a National Park, so dogs are not permitted.
Dogs are not permitted at Golden Hole.
