Location

WOOROOLIN

What it is?

A rural town 16 kms north of Kingaroy. There is a palustrine wetlands that is very obvious as you pass through the town. The railway line from Wondai opened in 1904 and closed in 2009. This is now used for cycling, walking/running and horse riding. The 2121 census recorded 319 people living in the town.

What it offers?

The Wooroolin Wetlands was declared a fauna sanctuary in 1973, it is now classified as a palustrine wetland meaning it is a non-tidal, inland, seasonally flooded vegetative swamp. 

There is a bird hide and two walking tracks. Free camping in town.  

The walking trails are only accessible during dry periods and can be accessed from Wooroolin Sports Ground. 

Over 25 different birds have been sighted including nankeen kestrels, striated pardalotes and golden-headed cisticola.

What we did?

We tried to get close to on three occasions, but each time it was too overgrown, access is via the Wooroolin Sports Ground. There is a pub and café if you are hungry.

Highlight?

It is a wildlife refuge.

Would I do it again?

No.

As a couple: Pre-downloaded maps on your phone (reception is patchy); water bottles; wide brim hat: sunscreen; bug spray; good sturdy shoes.

With Pets: No domestic animals allowed in the wetland zone.

Please be considerate of native wildlife.
